SEO or SEM, whichever you prefer (Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing) is a curious subject. There is what is known as "White Hat" SEO, which involves standard link building, blogging, and constant maintenance upon a site. "Black Hat" SEO involves one having multiple sites, whether in folders on a domain, subdomains, or separate domains (usually on throwaway .info domains), which are designed around a "niche." These sites then generate their own (useless or copied) content, display them to look like a portal, generec website, or blog, and attach various ads and affiliate offers. The Black Hat (BH for short) then performs various backlinking techniques, including guestbook and comment spam. Once enough high PageRank sites are spammed, Google sees the BH site as a site that needs to be indexed, and then the spammer hopefully gets enough traffic across his network of sites to make a living, if not a good profit.
Speaking of profit, you should try to
That said, it is time to discuss some methods of these BH site owners. Some simply use Wordpress. Using the free plugin WP-O-Matic, coupled with an AdSense optimized template, they can succeed. To further success with search engines, these BH SEO masters then use a large list of ping sites, as well as Autopinger to promote the RSS from their site. Specific methods aside, this is somewhat effective, as it gets you listed on blog directories, as well as getting the search engines' attention. A sitemap is a good idea for any webmaster, and these Wordpress sploggers use them as well. Since very few hits are received per Wordpress splog, such products as the Wordpress Mass Installer can be purchased. Using a wide variety of domains, some sploggers do very well, while others do not.
Another method is to use a content generator. These generators take articles from other websites and perform Markov upon them, which obfuscates them to the point of turning them into an article that is slightly different, thus avoiding charges of content theft. Then, these generators use keywords in a list (scraped from sites such as Overture) related to the main niche keyword to generate hundreds or thousands of pages of spam content. The BH then proceeds to linkspam and do their best to get indexed and make a profit.
These content generators are many times written by the BHs themselves, and many others use the GPL'ed content generators RSSGM and YACG. Whatever the case, these BHs usually have at least basic knowledge and skills with PHP.
