Hacking Your Alltel Razr V3m - A Guide |
|
Friday, 27 April 2007 |
(click screenshots below to enlarge) I recently was privelidged to have the opportunity to upgrade my cellular phone. I ended up getting Alltel's Razr, the V3m. There are plenty of Cingular and Verizon version tutorials out there, but some differences exist (although minor) between them. This tutorial describes how to setup the phone on a Windows machine, and gives a couple of hacks to change OEM images you can't usually change throught the phone itself.
First off, you will need the following software: Get it all in this zip file (16mb)
Hardware: Motorola V3m Razr USB cable
DO NOT CONNECT YOUR PHONE UNTIL I TELL YOU TO! Step 1:First, run the driver fix. If you get any messages warning against unsigned drivers, just click install anyway/continue. Following the install of the driver fix, install the Motorola Driver Software. Again, click continue where it asks you about the unsigned drivers.
Step 2: Proceed to extract P2K commander somewhere, then go to the next step.
Step 3:
Plug your phone into the computer, and remember which port you use. Use
the same port every time. After Windows installs your drivers, you
should hear the "device connected" sounds a couple times, then the
"device disconnected sound," followed by the "device connected" sound
again. Run the PST Phone Programmer, which can be found in either the
Start Menu -> Motorola, or on the Desktop. Once the phone is
connected, you can click the new button, then choose phonebook. Then at
the top click the Phone menu -> Phone Info. After that is done and
pops up an info dialog, leave the PST Phone Programmer running. (Note:
in the event of an error, unplug the phone, power cycle it, and then
plug it back in. Close and open the PST Phone Programmer, proceed with
steps above. If it still doesn't work, reboot the computer and try
again.)
Step 3:
Run P2K Commander. Click OK when it pops up a dialog box. Proceed to go
to the drop down menu in the right pane and select "p2k mobile phone."
The program should give a couple errors in the message box, but should
begin to index the files on your phone. If it doesn't, make sure that
you followed the instructions in for the PST Phone Programmer. Be
patient and persistant, trying until it works.
Step 4
 :
Allright, its time to backup the files we are going to replace. In the
right pane, open "a." Then go to the "mobile" folder. Copy alltel.gif
to a safe place (right click on it, then choose copy after making sure
the left pane is in an appropriate drive/folder of your choice). Then,
find (resource),
or create a gif image that is 96x80 pixels. Name it alltel.gif, and
copy it over to your phone by right clicking and selecting copy.
The startup and shutdown animations are easy to change too. Just go up
one directory, then open the "motorola->shared->picture" folder.
Find and copy (to backup) customer_opening.gif and
customer_closing.gif. Proceed to find (resource)
or create an animated gif to replace each, with a size of 176x220
pixels. Rename your startup screen customer_opening.gif, and your
shutdown screen to customer_closing.gif. CTRL+Select them, then right
click and copy.
Finally. if you wish to change the startup sound, go up one directory
and open the "audio" folder. Backup ui_start_up_mono.mp_ , then take a
SHORT (3-7 seconds or so) mp3 file and rename it to
"ui_start_up_mono.mp_" and copy it over. For the shutdown sound, go up
a couple directories, then go to the "system" folder. Find and backup
ui_start_dn_mono.mp_, then do the same as you did for the startup
sound. DONE!
Note: You can change system icons, as well as sounds and such. Just
make sure to back everything up so that you can put it all back to
factory settings to keep your warranty from being voided. Adding
ringtones is easy, just go to the motorola/shared/audio folder and drop
your mp3 and mid files there. You can add images by dropping them into
the motorola/shared/picture folder as well.
