G4 TV Moving...A Process of Death?
Sunday, 18 March 2007
According to both the G4 Rewind blog, as well as the TV Week site, the failing G4 network, as opposed to TechTV (which it absorbed), is having its studios and staff consolidated and merged into that of the Entertainment network.  Production crew and the CEO are to be laid off, apparently. To Kevin Pereria, host of "Attack of the Show," "it [just] means a new set..."

Despite every attempt at improving ratings, G4 has remained low on the rankings, and was 57th out of the 64 cable networks in the third quarter of 2006. The network has shifted somewhat from focusing on video games to instead focus on sex, drugs, and even more video games. There are seemingly few shows on the network worth watching, and many of those tend to be shows not produced in-house by G4 (syndicated, like Star Trek).

Personally, I hope this is the network's death throws. Perhaps Leo Laporte and Chris Pirillo (both TechTV Alumni) will have success with their brainchild, Undo.TV, and eventually get a TV channel. Until then, we must put up with the oncoming "filler" material that G4 produces.

The plan is for the G4 Studios in Santa Monica, CA to be closed on April 15th, and moved to Los Angeles, in the E! Network building.

If you haven't seen the TechTV section in the download area, or the links area, please do so using the menu to the right. I have a ton of good links to TechTV nostalgic content, and the downloads section holds a zip file of stuff I dug up on the Internet Archive. Coincidentally, I wrote an article about doing that that will be in the next issue of 2600 magazine.
