Ophcrack Live CD = Easy Windows Password Recovery
Monday, 02 April 2007
I recently was approached by a friend whose computer had "locked him out." After talking to him I have deduced that it was his sisters, and he somehow managed to return it to a system restore point that restored his sister's old password. He called her and she doesn't remember it, so he is totally locked out of the system. I don't have the option of using a standalone program to get the hash, and while I considered a site that decrypts hashes for you, after you boot from one of their disks, I really wanted something self-contained. I ended up deciding on Ophcrack, specifically their Live CD, for a few reasons: It is self contained, it is Linux (very good!), and it is fast. So I downloaded that puppy.

There are only a few steps to getting your password back, provided it doesn't use any freaky symbols, and isn't really long.

1. After downloading and burning the CD image, insert the CD into the target computer's drive and reboot the computer. The logo screen appears, at which you should hit enter. Text should scroll down the screen, and eventually you will have a graphical interface pop up, with the one and only window (Ophcrack).

2. Once the system is done, select the user account you wish to recover the password for, and click launch.

3. Depending on the speed of your system, the cracker will go to work, and if it can determine and decrypt your passsword, it will eventually display it in the "NTPassword" column. Write it down, click exit, remove the CD, and reboot. Use the password, and change it to something you will remember that is also secure.

That's it! You can find a screenshot gallery of this whole process over at Lifehacker.

TWIT Army Attacks G4 Headquarters
Sunday, 01 April 2007
Today a terrible battle rages as the TWIT Army attacks the G4 headquarters with all their might. Angered and confused by the sale of TWIT to the evil G4, the Army is trying to reclaim both the network and their brainwashed leader, Leo Laporte.
A noted general in the TWIT army refused any questions, but volunteered that  "Today is a new day in which a network of freedom, of great technology content will cross over from the internet to the airwaves to create a free network in which all of the geek society shall thrive. We will take this network as our own, revive our leader from his delusions, and put him back in his rightful place...as head of Undo.TV"
Undo.TV is a brainchild of Laportean design, and many have hoped that it would eventually end up on the airwaves. It appears that the TWIT army plans to steal G4, deprogram their leader, and instate him as the head of the network. Whatever the case, the battle seems to be unending, as long as Leo Laporte remains inside the G4 Studios.

For the history of this battle, see the Uncyclopedia entry here. Laporte's is an informative entry as well.

eBooks from eBay: Don't Get Screwed
Sunday, 01 April 2007
Ah, eBooks and information salesmen on eBay make a killing and usually sell information that can be Googled up for free. The sad thing is that many people buy into it all. I once did, but have figured out that Google can find just about anything. So, coming from my private collection of strange informational files, are the below...I am not responsible for anything stupid or illegal you may do. Knowledge is power though, so we should at least learn what we can. Some of this is quite dated, so take that into consideration.

"Master Wholesale Websites" (PDF)

"Secret Wholesale Sources" (DOC)

"eBay's Secret Wholesale Sources (DOC)

"Lumenlab DIY LCD Projector Plans" (PDF)

Projector Plans (Dead Website on Archive.org)

100 Inch Projector TV Plans (PDF)

"Info From eBay - (ZIP) In this zip file, you will find a lot of information, and one of the documents tells you how to commit mail fraud to get free stuff. This is highly illegal, as well as stupid. Don't do it, I am not responsible for your stupidity if you commit it, or perform anything else illegal that could be inside these files.

DSS Stuff - zip file ... This zip has some documents detailing satellite  TV. Again, this is info purposes only stuff, and you shouldn't do it. If you do try this, it isn't my fault when you get arrested.

More of this type of stuff (and newer, at that!) can be found at  Floodle.

Googlish-ly Ugly: But it Works!
Saturday, 31 March 2007
---Since this post, I have put the template together that you see now.

I know my site is slightly ugly, kindof like Google. Unfortunately, I have no skills when it comes to telling what looks good and what doesn't. I love my logo, but the pages themselves are a bit bland. The header with "From my brain..blah blah blah," could probably have something more useful put there, the background could use something (like diagonal grey lines??)...as for the divs and the content boxes, they need rounded corners.

When it comes to colors and such, I have no idea. I did have this concept  (i have a psd version too..oh where to put the ads and the catchphrase...?):

But am not skilled enough with php to create a template. If anybody wants the current template files to play around with, I would be happy to see how it looks on my site..

Note: Yes, I am begging for suggestions, and possibly free labor. If you actually choose to help me in any way, I will gladly put a link to your site on my Friends page, or give you a shoutout on my next post.

Blackhat SEO - Unethical, Indeed...But Illegal?
Friday, 30 March 2007
I am unsure as to the legality of blackhat SEO, that is, creating mass amount of keyword pages and getting them indexed, in the hope that people will come and click one of the AdSense ads. Is this considered illegal? I do not know, but technically, if you have a single page per keyword, aren't you actually providing a service for others who are searching for a topic? Aren't you helping them through the ads by giving them reputable links to take them to a site covering the keyword they entered? It benefits you through revenue, and helps them find what they need. I am unsure what to think about it. Is it wrong to make insane amounts of cash on AdSense using blackhat SEO, as long as you have tangible pages that help the users that see them?

Some sites that regard the topic include:

Syndk8 - "Blackhat SEO Paradise"
SEO Blackhat Blog
Just Google "blackhat SEO"
