Sorry I Haven't Written Recently
Monday, 14 May 2007
I have been busy trying to be active outdoors more than usual, and seem to have developed an addiction to the classic game of Quake III Arena. Don't worry, though. I will bring some interesting articles to the surface soon! Until then, why not look at the archives, and see about trying  some of the projects in there?

Oh - I may have some Joost invites soon. I may be nice and give a few of them away at some point. Keep checking back!

SEO Tip: Increase Your Site Size
Friday, 11 May 2007
Sorry about the pun in the title, but I couldn't resist. The bigger a site appears, the more search engine love the site will get, which means more "pages" of that site will be indexed within the engines...So what does a guy with anywhere from low to high amounts of content pages, with a good directory of links do? Make his site appear to have more pages than it really does.

Example:

In my links directory, I go from having "Link To A Cool Site" pointing to www.site.com to having "Link to A Cool Site" pointing to "http://www.mattparnell.com/link-to-a-cool-site.html" which redirects to www.site.com. Search engines then see that outlink as being an actual content page on my site.

Basically we make every outlink in our links directory appear to be a content page. Personally, I use Mambo CMS coupled with the 404 SEF component.  I am able to make every link on my site have any file extension I desire. Since my links directory has a click counter script that forwards people to the link after it records their click, I am able to make this all work. I have my file extension set to be .html, and so far this has worked out very well.  My site went from having 3XX pages indexed to having 13XX pages indexed. If you are using hard-coded pages, or are using a different CMS, you can find click counter scripts at hotscripts, and using those and .htaccess rewrites, you can achieve the same effect. Now get to work, and give it a try!

Vista Breaks Itself
Wednesday, 09 May 2007
It seems that Vista doesn't even require human interaction to break. In other words, Vista breaks itself... I was (unfortunately) running and using Vista to work on my website (I'm no Micro$oft fanboy...I usually use Kubuntu), when all of a sudden, all of my programs close, and the computer gives me the "logging off" message. I am thinking "What the heck!?" and then the screen tells me it is configuring updates. How nice of Micro$oft to build into its operating system something as useful as automatic updates, with such a detrimental side-effect. So I wait. The computer reboots itself, and after the bootloader selection and the loading Vista screen, what do I see? Not my usual login screen, but a totally black screen. Then a few seconds later and boom!...a quarter-inch in width vertical line going down the right side of my screen. Irritated enough already, I reboot, and it does it again. I then proceed againt to reboot into safe mode. Windows was nice enough to install a new display driver. I rolled it back and rebooted. That fixed it...
Time after time this keeps happening, I really need to turn that crappy update feature off. As it happens more and more, I have found the fastest way to alleviate the problem to be reboot, use the "Last known good configuration option," which rolls back the graphics driver, and then reboot and select low-res video, and just crank the resolution back up when I get into Windows. Long story short, I hate Vista, and love Kubuntu. Try Linux, please.

Ethanol is a Scam
Tuesday, 08 May 2007
We hear people trumping Ethanol all the time. They tell us how amazing it is and how it is going to save us money, save the environment, and keep us from using foreign oil. In truth, Ethanol is a scam and a farce. It is only a way for politicians and their cronies to earn easy money by pillaging the tax system. How? Let me explain. Please read on.

Currently in Missouri is a very disputed problem. The challenge to the construction of an Ethanol plant has recently been shot down in court. Thus, the construction will go on. Now wait just a second- shouldn't the citizens be for the construction of such a plant? What gives?

It turns out that this project will be constructed near hundreds of homes, which devalues them greatly. Alongside that, the production processes threaten the natural environment, most notably the water table. The water table in this area is already gradually decreasing, and the construction of an Ethanol plant would be devastating. These plants require millions of gallons of water, which in this case, are to be pumped from wells, thus depleting the water that the citizens of the area rely on. This problem gets even better: the turmoil over the impact on the environment is only half of it. Politically, this is a firestorm.

Various Government entities are planning to subsidize this Ethanol, with the equivalent of $0.51 per gallon. This money will not be made back, and is coming out of the taxpayers' wallets. Right there is a problem: how is this helping with the price at the pump? The money is still being taken, just through the state Government rather than through the oil companies. This saves nobody money. As for the plant itself, the company owning the land and the plant itself is owned by none other than the cousin of an important Government figure. What a coincidence. No political hanky-panky is going on there, now is it? No money going one way or the other, except for the big, fat subsidization checks, right?...

Are there any benefits to installing this plant? It is close to corn producing areas, although the gasoline that is required to mix with the Ethanol must be transported via train, thus burning diesel (there goes the whole getting independent of the foreign oil). When the Ethanol-gas mix is done, how do we get it to the pumps? More transportation (all diesel powered, of course) via semi and train.

Alongside the previously stated mess, corn feed prices will go up, thus driving up the price of meat, as well as corn in the stores. This will cause the consumers of the world to pay yet even more money, coupled with the tax to subsidize these plants. These problems don't apply to one plant, but all of the Ethanol plants in America. The more we build, the more we will have to pay in taxes and living expenses. Remember the unsuccessful coal-gasification plants? They are all rotting away, because it cost too much to run them. History tends to repeat itself.

How is any of this beneficial to anyone (besides certain government figures and their family and friends)? In my opinion, it isn't. It would be far cheaper and less taxing on the environment to just drill ANWAR (the heat of the oil pipes actually increases the successes of mating caribou conception), as well as pursuing other alternatives, and drilling in other areas. Also, such drilling wouldn't make prices of foods commonly consumed by Americans go much higher in price. All in all, Ethanol is a scam.

Kubuntu - My Favorite Distro and Why You Should Try It
Friday, 04 May 2007

I have had way to many problems lately with Vista on my HP Pavilion dv9000 (specifically a dv9250us)... Quite frankly, it is pretty, but it really doesn't get the job done. Where did I turn? I didn't go to Windows XP. I instead opted for Linux. I chose the Kubuntu distro, which is Ubuntu Linux that uses the KDE manager rather than Gnome. So far, it is working beautifully for me. I am using the 64 bit version on my dual-core Athalon, and couldn't be happier. Although there is a slight learning curve, it really is worth trying. Here are some more reasons to try it:

  • Both 32 and 64 Bit Versions are Available
  • Its FREE
  • You can run many Windoze applications using WINE
  • If you need Windoze, just install it on a virtual machine using QEMU
  • It is way faster than any version of Windows
  • It (Linux in General) is the choice of many hackers
  • Security shouldn't be much of a problem, as opposed to Windoze
  • There are a slew of free applications that do everything and more that their Mac and Windoze competitors can

So go check it out! You can take a test drive without losing your current settings by downloading the iso and just running the live cd part of it. Should you choose to install, you can repartition without losing data, and the bootloader will see your Win/Mac installation automatically. I will write a tutorial sometime for my specific laptop, and post drivers as it is difficult sometimes to set some of the hardware up. That said, check it out!
